Teachers Pests

It all began from passion; the passion for teaching. The desire to inspire confidence, a love of learning, and a sense of discovery in our students. During the craziness known as 2020, with school as we knew it being flipped on its head, we decided to turn our passion into a brand new endeavor!

The name and design logo came from our creative younger sister- a funny play on our last name “Pest” and the phrase “Teacher’s Pet”. We knew it was a winner right away!

About Courtney

Courtney, like many young people, began her foray into teaching by setting up pretend classrooms in her bedroom and “encouraging” her siblings to be her students. Once she became of age, she began a rewarding childcare enterprise by watching the younger children in her hometown.
When it was time for her to choose a program in University, she jumped at the opportunity to acquire a coveted spot in a unique program; earning Bachelor Degrees in Psychology and Education, along with a Diploma in Early Childhood Education in 5 years. During year 3 of this program she had already decided she would further her education once she graduated for her passion lied with children on the ASD spectrum. Courtney was accepted into the Post-Graduate Certificate Program at Fanshawe College for Autism and Behavioural Sciences before finishing her first program! She graduated from both programs and was ready to take on the world!
Before beginning Teachers Pest Tutoring, she worked at a Childcare Facility and as an Educational Assistant, respectively. She then took a leave from the workforce due to a back injury, but her passion for both learning and teaching never wavered. She is more energized than ever to take on new and exciting challenges!

About Michael

Michael grew up with a lot of the same fascinations as any kid; dinosaurs and outer space! In fact, for a lot of his life he thought he would grow up to be a paleontologist!
A born perfectionist and people pleaser, Michael was always at the top of his classes and eager to learn. He became even more interested in science, and not only science but all of the types of sciences, in high school. Michael was lucky to have some pretty awesome teachers at his high school that introduced him to different aspects and career opportunities in the science realm.
Michael applied to a few amazing universities for science programs and he got into all of them! He ended up choosing Western University for Pharmacology and thus began his journey into doctor-hood! After his third year he was granted an internship at Agriculture Canada studying bacteria and then took a summer job at a Greenhouse Research Center studying soybean pathogens.
After finishing his undergraduate degree he began his Master’s studies in an amazing lab led by Dr. Beier studying osteoarthritis. At this time, Michael knew he wanted to continue with research, and continue in this lab with his project, and so his Master’s program turned into a PhD program!
Michael remained in Dr. Beier’s lab after earning his doctorate, working as a Research Associate until COVID and an unfortunate lack of funding hit. Now, Dr. Michael is working with Courtney as a Science Tutor and editing scientific journals from home until the pandemic passes and he can get back into a lab! Michael loves science, teaching science, and watching other people grow to love science as well!
